How Tree Roots Can Destroy Your Sprinkler System — And What to Do About It
If you have mature trees in your yard and you've noticed that some sprinkler heads on a zone are working great while others barely pop up or produce almost no water, tree roots may be the culprit. It's one of the more frustrating sprinkler problems we diagnose at Alternate Rain because the damage happens completely underground and out of sight — often over years — before the signs become obvious enough to notice.
Here's what's happening beneath your lawn, which trees cause the most problems in the Omaha area, and how to identify whether tree roots are affecting your system.
How tree roots damage underground irrigation pipe
Most residential sprinkler systems in Omaha use polyethylene pipe — commonly called poly pipe — to run water from zone valves to individual sprinkler heads. Poly pipe is flexible, durable, and well suited for underground installation. But that flexibility has a weakness: it can be compressed and deformed by external pressure over time.
Tree roots grow aggressively in search of water and nutrients, and underground irrigation lines are exactly the kind of consistent moisture source that attracts them. As a root grows larger and thicker over time, it can wrap around or press directly against poly pipe. The root doesn't need to puncture the pipe to cause problems — it simply needs to grow large enough to compress it. Once the pipe is kinked or partially collapsed at the point of root contact, water flow through that section is restricted. Depending on the severity of the kink, the effect ranges from reduced pressure at downstream heads to a complete blockage.
What makes this particularly tricky is that the zone valve still opens, water still flows, and the heads before the kink point still work fine. From the surface it looks like part of your system is working and part isn't — and without knowing what to look for underground, it's easy to misdiagnose as a valve problem, a clogged nozzle, or a failing head.
The worst offenders in Omaha: river birch and locust
In our experience installing and servicing sprinkler systems across the Omaha area for over 40 years, two trees consistently cause the most underground irrigation problems — river birch and locust.
River birch is one of the most popular landscape trees in Nebraska because it's fast growing, attractive, and tolerates wet soil well. That same characteristic that makes it love wet soil also drives its root system aggressively toward any underground moisture source it can find. River birch roots are notorious for seeking out and wrapping around irrigation lines, and because the tree grows quickly, the roots can reach and damage pipe in a surprisingly short time after planting. What looks like a modest tree in your front yard may already have roots extending well beyond its canopy.
Locust trees — both honey locust and black locust — are similarly aggressive. They're common in Omaha subdivisions because they're hardy and provide good shade, but their root systems spread wide and shallow, putting them in direct competition with shallow-run irrigation lines. We've seen locust roots kink poly pipe so severely that water flow is reduced to a trickle at heads just a few feet downstream.
Other trees worth watching in the Omaha area include silver maple, cottonwood, and willow — all of which have aggressive, moisture-seeking root systems that can cause similar problems over time.
The telltale sign of a tree root problem
The most reliable indicator that tree roots are affecting your sprinkler system is a specific pattern of pressure loss on a single zone — and it's one that's easy to identify once you know what you're looking for.
Stand at your controller and run one zone at a time while walking the yard. On a healthy zone, every head should pop up to roughly the same height and produce similar pressure and spray distance. If you notice that some heads earlier in the zone — closer to the valve — are working normally while heads further along the line have little to no pressure, that's the pattern that points toward a root kink rather than a valve or nozzle issue.
The heads with good pressure are being supplied by pipe that hasn't been compromised. The heads with poor pressure are downstream of the restriction — they're getting whatever water can squeeze through the kinked section, which often isn't much. The location of the pressure drop relative to any trees in the yard almost always confirms the diagnosis. If there's a river birch or locust between where the good heads are and where the weak heads start, that tree is almost certainly the source of the problem.
What the repair involves
Once we identify the location of the root kink, the repair typically involves excavating at the problem area, cutting out the compromised section of poly pipe, and installing a replacement section. Depending on how aggressively the root has grown into the pipe area, we may also need to reroute the line to avoid the same problem recurring.
In cases where tree roots have been particularly aggressive, we sometimes recommend running the replacement pipe through a conduit sleeve at the root crossing point, which gives the pipe a protective barrier that roots can't compress. It adds a small amount of material cost but significantly extends the life of the repair in areas where root pressure is ongoing.
If the damage is severe enough — multiple kink points, significant pipe collapse, or roots that have worked their way into fittings — a larger section of lateral line may need to be replaced. This is rare but worth knowing about if you have multiple mature trees in close proximity to your irrigation lines.
Catching it early
The best way to avoid a major root repair is to pay attention to your system's performance each spring when you do your startup. Running through each zone and watching for that specific pattern — strong heads early in the zone, weak heads downstream — is something any homeowner can do in about fifteen minutes. Catching a root kink early, when the compression is partial rather than complete, usually means a smaller repair and less pipe to replace.
